I’ve been absent for a long time because I’ve been putting all of my writing, photo taking, and listening efforts into a project that I can’t wait to share when it’s ready. For now though I’m hanging out on the streets, listening to the sounds of the city. Last night, while Kevin was playing his strum stick on South Congress in Austin, Jean who is from the Sudan talked about slavery. He goes, “Slavery was 50/50, good and bad.” When I asked him what was good he mentioned the medicine and education that colonists brought. According to him, the bad was the colonists stealing the natural resources from Africa, like gold and diamonds. “What about stealing people,” I asked. He smiled and goes, “Look at me, I’m not slave material. I’m too skinny.”
