Back from the Dead (for now) · Apr 23, 04:22 PM

The theme of the last issue of Young Philosopher was ‘travel,’ not necessarily seeing new places, rather seeing with new eyes. It wasn’t necessarily what I saw, so much as leaving my fun, strangely comfortable life in New York, that saved me this time.

In the past six weeks I have gone to Costa Rica, a decision made at 3:00 am for a 6:00 am flight, got fired from a job for the first time, bought an energetic, painfully painted self portrait, the last one an artist painted before becoming sober (he just got off the street, if he doesn’t die soon, you’ll hear about him), flew business class to Tokyo, finished a documentary on the dancer Takahiro that I began three years ago, got the heaviest weight that I’ve ever endured lifted off my shoulders, and saw, got a letter from, or talked on the phone to most of the greatest people I know. And despite the difficulties of collecting unemployment and all those other things that everyone deals with in one way or another, I couldn’t feel better.

That’s a little update since I’ve been away from the site for a while.

Back street in Shinjuku.

Craig was at home in Tokyo. I shot this photo at Mari’s store in Harajuku, Feline. Last time I saw Mari was in New York a few years ago. click here for the interview. Mari is the one to the right of Craig.

  1. awesome! you got to do a whole Tokyo issue. And instead of movie or book reviews – sake reviews!
