I have been on a horse two times in my life and it would take a lot to make a third. The first time I almost jumped off. The horse started galloping and I got super tense, gripping it with my thighs, taking little terrified breaths. I know this is the worst thing I could have done but I was freaking out and everyone was laughing, ugggh it was rough. The second time I was walking around the pyramids in Egypt. I was with a friend and he tried to talk me into riding a camel. Too high I thought, but that beautiful human ability to forget was working and I decided to ride a horse. There was no saddle. I just jumped on and then it happened again. The malnourished horse probably used the last of its energy to scare me. It worked.

I didn’t have it in me to try to talk the two boys in the photo above to try riding a horse. I was actually tempted to jump on again though, but even the spectacle of riding a horse through public housing wasn’t even enough to get me back on. Think about how crazy these two pictures are. I took them about three minutes apart. They were shot directly across the street from one another. Everyone was scared of the little girl and her horse. Not a single person got on. She sat in the empty lot alone, pulling weeds. I talked to her but couldn’t even entertain her by getting on the animal.
