It's Been a Long Time · Feb 18, 10:26 PM

I haven’t put up any posts for a long time because I went through one of those periods where I was anticipating so many things and I wasn’t comfortable with where I was. [Right now, I’m picturing Fat Joe at the 2005 MTV Music Video Awards running all over the red carpet, shouting, “It’s all or nothing baby. Crack, Crack.”] If I’m not comfortable it shows all over everything I do and it screws up a lot of things. I could have easily prevented the feeling but I saw the greater good in enduring the pain.

Here’s a comfort photo to get things rolling.

The highlight of my day today was cooking dinner for an 89 year old man. I was nervous because I promised steak the night before but I have never cooked a steak. I’ve never bought, nor cooked a piece of meat.

I took the rib eyes out of the freezer the night before and let them thaw in the refrigerator. This evening I preheated the oven to 400 and put it on broil. Earlier I put in a couple of baked potatoes. Magically everything turned out perfect. When I asked Warren what he thought of the meat he gave me the choo choo sign/trying to get a truck driver to pull his horn sign. I smiled.

Looking at the satisfaction on Warren’s face I realized that I too would rather see The Return of Frank James, in color, and drink a milk shake, than go to a whorehouse. That was the decision the new Army recruits had who’d come up from Woodstock, IL to Chicago for their physical exams in 1940.

Warren joined the Army as a stepping stone to becoming a cadet. He dreamed about jumping out of airplanes and floating to the ground. He also wanted to learn how to fly planes.

He was 21 when he joined the Army. A recruiter came to the local post office to solicit recruits. This isn’t where Warren met his twist of fate though. Warren had been working construction for his future father-in-law when the recruiter, either bored and out for a walk, or coming back from lunch, passed Warren at the construction site and started talking to him. Weeks later, he was up in Chicago for physical examination number two and he chose to lead a group of men to see The Return of Frank James and have a milk shake, while another group solicited sex. The date was August 26, 1940. I wonder which afternoon of fun cost more back then.
